This past weekend, two Millbrook wrestlers had the honor of participating in the 4-A State Tournament in Greensboro! Senior co-captain Vincent Ngwu wrestled in the 220 pound bracket while junior co-captain Crayton Saby wrestled in the 113 pound bracket.
Crayton went 2-2 for the weekend. He recorded a quick win by pinfall in his opening match versus JH Rose on Friday afternoon. Saturday proved difficult in the 113 pound bracket. Crayton dropped his first match on Saturday to fall to the consolation bracket. He advanced to the third round of the consolation bracket where he was finally eliminated by his opponent from Panther Creek. His 2-2 record this year is an improvement to last year’s 1-2 record in the 2014 State Tournament. Congratulations Crayton!
Vincent was busy this weekend, wrestling a total of five matches and finishing with a 3-2 record in 4th place! He advanced to the semi-finals with a close overtime victory in his first match and a win by pinfall in his quarter-final match. He lost to his opponent, soon-to-be 220 pound champion from NW Guilford, in the semi-finals. Once in the consolation bracket, Vincent won his consolation semi-final match, advancing him to the consolation finals. He finished fourth on the weekend! Vincent soaked in the experience on the mat and on the podium. After graduation this summer, Vince plans to join the Navy. Congratulations Vincent!

In an exciting Cap-VIII Conference matchup, Millbrook took a one-point “tie breaker” victory over the Broughton Capitals, advancing to 3-0 in the conference.
Wrestling fans got their money’s worth last night at Broughton High School. The match was an uphill battle for the Wildcats as they forfeited the first match at 113 pounds and started in a six point hole. The Medina brothers scored back-to-back decision victories to tie the match up at six points.
Robinson Carroll put the Wildcats in the lead with a third period pinfall at 132 pounds. Starting at 138 pounds, Broughton went on a three match winning streak, recording a major decision and then two pinfalls at 145 pounds and 152 pounds. Josh Reid stopped the streak in the 160 pound match with a two point victory, 9-7.
Exciting matches at 182 pounds, 195 pounds and 220 pounds saw three victories by Millbrook wrestlers – Matt Flores, Wilhelm Heinsen and Jacob High, respectively.
With Millbrook’s Ty Smith collecting a forfeit at 285 pounds, the match was all but sealed up for the Wildcats. Millbrook held a six point lead heading into the final match of the night – a match that Broughton won by pinfall at 106 pounds. The score was tied at 31 points each and the rule book was pulled out. Millbrook took the team victory by virtue of most head-to-head matches won.
The Wildcats will be back on the mat this weekend at the annual WRAL Invitational hosted by Athens Drive High School on Friday, December 19th and Saturday, December 20th!
